Law establishing a Russian office of the World Intellectual Property Organisation

May 5, 2014

Vladimir Putin signed Federal Law On Ratification of the Agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) on the Establishment of the WIPO Representative Office in the Russian Federation.

The Agreement was signed in Geneva on April 10, 2013 and has been temporarily implemented by both parties since June 10, 2013.

The Agreement defines the representative office’s aims and functions, the parties’ rights and contribution, and has provisions on privileges and immunities granted to the office’s staff, similar to those the Russian Federation offers other international organisations and their staff.

The office’s main tasks are to facilitate the development of an intellectual property protection system in Russia, support the WIPO’s global systems for registering intellectual property, and provide technical assistance within the WIPO’s global infrastructure development programmes.
