The GLONASS system involves space satellites segment, control segment, and users’ navigation equipment.
The first GLONASS satellite was launched into orbit on October 12, 1982 and on September 24, 1993 the initial system of 12 satellites became fully operated by the Russian Federation’s Ministry of Defence. In December 1995, GLONASS deployed a full constellation of 24 satellites required to provide full coverage of the globe.
The GLONASS control and monitoring segment includes the Ground Control Centre and a network of metering, control and monitoring stations dispersed throughout Russia.
