The Russian Federation is the founder and the sole shareholder in Russian Railways. The Russian Government exercises the powers of the shareholders on behalf of the Russian Federation.
The company was established on October 1, 2003, and its key areas of business include freight and passenger transportation. The company owns 99% of Russia’s common-carrier railroad lines totalling 85,200 kilometres, of which 42,900 kilometres is electrified, and is responsible for 43% of Russia’s total freight traffic (including pipelines) and more than 41% of passenger traffic.
