is an honorary title established in 1992 and awarded by the President of Russia as recognition of services to the state and the people of Russia involving a heroic deed. Heroes of the Russian Federation are presented with a special award, the Gold Star medal.
The medal made of gold and weighing 21.5 grams is a five-pointed star with polished interfacial arms on the front, each arm measuring 15 millimetres. The medal is suspended from a metallic, gold-plated medal-ribbon brooch 15 millimetres high and 19.5 millimetres wide, wrapped in tri-colour moire ribbon in the colours of the Russian Federation State Flag.
The title of the Hero of the Russian Federation has been awarded to over 1000 people.
