The President visited the Archangel Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin, where the relics of the Holy Blessed Grand Prince Dmitry Donskoy had recently been uncovered. The head of state viewed the burial site and took part in a prayer service.
Access to the relics was gained in July of this year during restoration work prompted by subsidence of the floor slabs and the threat of collapse of the tombs above the graves of the grand princes. Archaeologists received the blessing of His Holiness Kirill, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia. After dismantling the crypt’s brickwork, three white-stone sarcophagi were revealed and identified as belonging to the burials of the Holy Blessed Grand Prince Dmitry Donskoy, Grand Prince Ivan Krasny, and Prince Dmitry Zhilka of Uglich.
The remains of the holy warrior prince Dmitry Donskoy were found completely preserved in the sarcophagus, with the exception of the left heel bone. The Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church blessed the placement of three relic fragments in three reliquaries for veneration by the faithful.
Once the restoration and preventative work is complete, the sarcophagus will be sealed, and the crypt will be restored to its original condition.
During his visit to the cathedral, Vladimir Putin was accompanied by Presidential Envoy to the Central Federal District Igor Shchegolev, his deputy Alexei Yeryomin, Deputy Director General of the Moscow Kremlin State Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve Andrei Batalov, and Vice President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Director of the Academy's Institute of Archaeology Academician Nikolai Makarov.
