December 17, 2015

The meeting, chaired by Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office Sergei Ivanov, summed up the 2015 results of implementing the plan of key activities to prepare for and hold celebrations, and identified priority objectives for 2016.

In accordance with the Presidential Executive Order of June 27, 2014 on celebrating in 2018 the 100th birthday anniversary of the great author and one of the most noteworthy liberal thinkers of the 20th century Alexander Solzhenitsyn, an organising committee has been formed under the chairmanship of Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office Sergei Ivanov. On January 28, 2015, the committee approved a plan of key events honouring the writer.

Organising committee members include representatives from federal and regional authorities, as well as cultural and academic institutions.

The plan of key events stipulates holding celebrations, festivals and exhibitions, as well as carrying out international projects, including publications, museum openings and the creation of new exhibitions.

The major event of 2015 was the opening of the Alexander Solzhenitsyn Museum information and cultural centre in Kislovodsk. Book exhibitions featuring dedicated sections honouring the writer have been held in Lebanon, Slovakia, Belarus, Latvia, Kazakhstan, Slovenia, Canada, Morocco, Georgia and other countries.

The central celebratory events in 2018 will be an international conference, the erection of a monument to Alexander Solzhenitsyn in Moscow, the opening of a memorial museum apartment in Ryazan, and preparation and publication of The Gulag Archipelago special edition with research annotations.
