In a joint statement, Mr Putin and Mr Aliyev pointed out that international terrorism, extremism and violent separatism posed a growing threat to security and stability in international relations. The sides confirmed their intention to develop cooperation in the struggle against international terrorism.

Mr Putin and Mr Aliyev expressed their support for effective measures to normalise the situation and restore peace and stability in the Caucasus and also to secure an early settlement of regional conflicts in accordance with the universally accepted rules of international law and above all through the observance and guaranteeing of sovereignty, territorial integrity and inviolability of internationally recognised borders of states. In that context, they also pronounced for an early political solution to the Nagorny Karabakh conflict.

Russia and Azerbaijan also confirmed their desire to define a new legal status for the Caspian Sea as soon as possible, based on the consent of all Caspian countries.

Mr Putin and Mr Aliyev signed a treaty of long-term economic cooperation for the period until 2010.

The two presidents looked on as the following agreements were signed in the Kremlin: an agreement on the basic principles and areas of economic cooperation, an agreement on co-production, an agreement on cooperation and exchange of information about violations of tax legislation and an agreement on border representatives.
