The President stressed the tremendous contribution made by the great Russian scientist to the progress of Russian and global science, his firm civic position and the role Zhores Alferov played in Russia’s public life.

The message of condolences reads, in part:

“The passing of Zhores Alferov is a huge, irreparable loss for Russian science, for the country to serving which he devoted his entire life.

Zhores Alferov was an outstanding scientist, a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and a Nobel Prize winner. A man of colossal creative and constructive energy, a great worker and enthusiast, he has made a unique contribution to the development of advanced scientific knowledge over years of fruitful work. He was always full of new ideas and plans. His intense research and public activity, a firm civic stance, and devotion to the ideals of justice and humanism have earned Zhores Alferov high and indisputable respect both in Russia and far beyond its borders.”

Academician Zhores Alferov died aged 88 in St Petersburg on March 2.

Zhores Alferov was a Soviet and Russian physicist, the 2000 Nobel Prize winner in physics for developing fast optoelectronic and microelectronic components made from semiconductor heterostructures. He is also a laureate of the Lenin Prize, the USSR State Prize, the State Prize of the Russian Federation; full cavalier of the Order For Services to the Fatherland; Foreign Associate of the United States National Academy of Sciences, Korean Academy of Science and Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Polish Academy of Sciences; member of the State Duma of the Russian Federation since 1995.
