The 2010 Russian Federation National Award in Literature and Arts is conferred to Vladimir Malyshev for his contribution to preserving and promoting cultural heritage, developing traditions and modernising Russian cinematic education.

Vladimir Malyshev, born on November 11, 1949 in the village of Novo-Petrovsk in Moscow Region, holds a Ph.D. in economics and a D.Sc. in art history. He is a screenwriter, documentary producer, and the rector of the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography.

In 1975, Mr Malyshev graduated from the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography. In 1990, he became general director of the State Film Fund of the USSR (now the State Film Fund of Russia). Under his leadership, the State Film Fund became the largest film archive in the world, receiving the status of a particularly valuable facility of cultural heritage for the peoples of the Russian Federation. It was essentially due to his firm position after the fall of the USSR that the world’s most comprehensive Soviet film collection survived and remained in Russia’s possession. On Mr Malyshev’s initiative and with his direct participation, the unique Belye Stolby Archival Film Festival was established in 1997 and has become one of the most interesting events on the global cinematic calendar.

In 2005, Vladimir Malyshev developed the concept and organised an annual Baltic Debuts International Film Festival for young cinematographers from the Baltic countries in Svetlogorsk, Kaliningrad Region.

Mr Malyshev became head of the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography in 2007 and began actively working to revive the unique Russian school of cinema, strengthening the institute’s traditions and giving particular attention to modernising the academic process and upgrading its material and technical resources.
