Law regulating the activities of Russian citizens and legal entities in the Antarctic

June 7, 2012

Vladimir Putin signed the Federal Law On Regulation of Activities of Russian Citizens and Russian Legal Entities in the Antarctic.

The federal law stipulates that Russian citizens and legal entities engaged in activities in the Antarctic that are subject to licensing in accordance with Russian legislation must possess a license for such activities, issued in the manner prescribed by the law.

In addition, the federal law defines the responsibilities of citizens and legal entities to ensure the safety of their activities in the Antarctic, including the removal from the area of the Antarctic Treaty of waste generated as a result of their activities, as well as property, regardless of its condition, which was used for the implementation of their activities, within three years after the expiration of their licence for activities in the Antarctic.
