April 5, 2021

The President signed the Federal Law On Amending Article 3541 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.

In accordance with the Federal Law, the following acts are recognised as crimes and are punishable for the rehabilitation of Nazism under Article 3541 of the Criminal Code: publicly disseminating knowingly false information about veterans of the Great Patriotic War; disparaging their honour and dignity; and insulting the memory of defenders of the Fatherland.

Any of these crimes, as well as other acts mentioned in this article of the Code, carries a maximum punishment of incarceration for up to five years.

The Federal Law also increases the fine imposed as punishment for committing acts of rehabilitation of Nazism to 3 million rubles, and with aggravating factors, to up to 5 million rubles.

The new legislation also envisages greater criminal liability if the relevant act of rehabilitation of Nazism was committed using information and telecommunication networks, including the internet.
