A new memorable date has been set in Russia’s calendar – Baptism of Rus Day

June 1, 2010

Dmitry Medvedev signed Federal Law amending Article 11 of the Federal Law On Dates of Military Glory and Memorable Dates in Russia.

The law adds a new date to the list of the country’s celebrations: July 28 – Baptism of Rus Day.

In the Orthodox Church calendar it was on this day (July 15 in the Julian calendar) that people paid tribute to the memory of Grand Prince Vladimir – the Baptiser of Kievan Rus.

The federal law gives legal status to this date, which commemorates an important historical event that has had a great influence on the social, spiritual and cultural development of the peoples of Russia, and on strengthening Russian statehood.
