Telephone conversation with President of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan

February 23, 2012

Dmitry Medvedev had a telephone conversation with President of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, as part of an effort to broaden telephone contacts regarding the situation in Syria (earlier, the President of Russia spoke with King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, President of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and Prime Minister of Iraq Nouri al-Maliki).

The President outlined Russia’s position on settling the situation in Syria. He particularly emphasised the need for ending the violence as quickly as possible, regardless of its origin, establishing broad dialogue with participation by all sides involved in Syria’s internal conflict, and respecting Syria’s sovereignty.

Mr Medvedev stressed that external involvement and attempts to establish the legitimacy of the leadership of any particular government from the outside are contrary to international law and pose a threat to regional and global stability.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan showed understanding to the approaches outlined by the President of Russia. The two sides agreed to maintain contact and engage in further coordination in bilateral and international formats in the interest of settling the situation in Syria, ensuring peace and stability in the Middle East.

The heads of state also noted the high level of Russian-UAE relations and discussed prospects for further strengthening them.
