Russian-Afghan talks

January 21, 2011, The Kremlin, Moscow

Talks between Dmitry Medvedev and Afghan President Hamid Karzai took place in the Kremlin.

During the talks both presidents paid particular attention to enhancing Russian-Afghan cooperation in the fight against illicit drug trafficking, organised crime and terrorism. In this respect corresponding agencies of both nations are working actively to increase cooperation, also by using the potential of regional and international organisations, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation ( SCO).

Both sides stressed the importance of developing economic cooperation. Russia intends to participate in reconstruction of facilities that are of key importance to Afghanistan, in such sectors as transportation, power industry, and management of natural resources. These plans have been laid down in the interstate agreement on economic cooperation that was signed following the talks between Dmitry Medvedev and Hamid Karzai.

President Karzai is in Moscow on an official visit at Dmitry Medvedev's invitation. In 2010 presidents of Russia and Afghanistan met three times.
