Condolences to President of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai

September 21, 2011

Dmitry Medvedev sent his condolences to President of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai following the killing on September 20 of the head of the High Peace Council of Afghanistan and the country’s former president, Burhanuddin Rabbani.

The President said, in particular, in his telegram:

“Mr Rabbani was one of the staunchest advocates of a free, stable, and strong Afghanistan. Over many years he worked tirelessly in the service and interests of his people. In his capacity as head of the High Peace Council of Afghanistan he made a great contribution to the country’s national reconciliation.

The killing of Mr Rabbani confirms the need to step up the international efforts to fight terrorism.

In this respect, I reaffirm that Russia is ready to be of every possible assistance to the friendly Afghan people in fighting the extremism that is the main obstacle to rebuilding peace and stability in Afghanistan.”
