Protocol on amendments to agreement on Russian military base in Armenia has been submitted to State Duma for ratification

Dmitry Medvedev submitted to the State Duma for ratification Protocol No.5 dated March 16, 1995 between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Armenia on amendments to the agreement between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Armenia on the Russian military base in the Republic of Armenia.

The protocol was signed in Yerevan, Armenia on August 20, 2010.

In accordance with the Protocol’s amendments, apart from protecting Russia’s interests, the Russian military base in Armenia will ensure the security of the Republic of Armenia jointly with its armed forces. To this end, the Russian party shall assist in providing the Republic of Armenia with modern and compatible weaponry and special military equipment.

The Protocol also extends the term of the Agreement from 25 to 49 years. This period shall be automatically extended for successive five-year periods, unless either party notifies the other party in writing not less than six months before the expiration of the term of the Agreement, of its intention to terminate it.

The supplies of weapons and military equipment to the Armed Forces of the Republic of Armenia with will be carried out in accordance with Russian legislation on military technical cooperation with foreign states and military technical assistance will be financed by the Russian Defence Ministry.
