Dmitry Medvedev sent a congratulatory message to President of the Republic of Benin Yayi Boni following his election to the post of Chairman of the African Union.
The message reads, in part:
“Today, the African Union is an established and influential intergovernmental organisation, symbolising the decision of 54 African nations’ leaders to obtain a greater degree of integration. The active role of Africa’s largest political alliance throughout this decade in strengthening inter-African dialogue and cooperation, achieving sustainable development, and promoting the settlement of crisis situations in the region have earned it great respect and appreciation in the African community and throughout the world.
I am certain that African Union member-states’ aspiration to resolve their pressing problems independently will continue to help in expanding Africa’s input into the formation of a more balanced system of international relations.
Russia intends to maintain its traditionally friendly ties with all of the region’s countries and actively participate in the international community’s efforts to provide comprehensive assistance to Africa.
In this context, we are counting on your support in promoting Russian investment projects on the continent, expanding foreign policy coordination with the African Union in the interest of strengthening stability in the region and the world.”
