This is the first visit by a Russian leader to the Republic of Cyprus. The visit is timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between the two states.
Dmitry Medvedev and President Demetris Christofias discussed a wide range of issues, including cooperation in the economy, finance, tourism and humanitarian sphere.
The two presidents exchanged views on current international issues. In particular, the sides discussed relations between Russia and the EU, including the prospects for introducing visa-free travel regime between Russia and the European Union. Dmitry Medvedev thanked the Cypriot leadership for its support for the policy of rapprochement between Russia and the EU.
The conclusion of a legally binding European Security Treaty was also touched upon. Particular attention was paid to a Cyprus settlement. The parties reaffirmed their commitment to achieving a comprehensive, just and viable settlement in Cyprus based on relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
The outcome of the talks is reflected in the Joint Programme of Action for 2010–2013 signed by the two presidents. Dmitry Medvedev and Demetris Christofias also issued a joint statement to mark the 65th anniversary of the victory over Nazism, which reflects the general views on the outcome and lessons of World War II.
In addition, a set of documents was signed in the presence of the two heads of states defining areas of cooperation between Russia and Cyprus in the coming years.
After the talks, Dmitry Medvedev decorated President of Cyprus Demetris Christofias with the Order of Friendship for his great personal contribution to the development of Russian-Cypriot relations.
During his visit, Dmitry Medvedev met with President of the House of Representatives of Cyprus Marios Garoyian, leaders of parliamentary parties, and Chrysostomos II, Archbishop of New Justiniana and All Cyprus.
Dmitry Medvedev also took part in the Cyprus-Russia Business Forum.
