Vladimir Putin sent a message of condolence to President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Federal Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel on the death of Helmut Kohl, a highly esteemed statesman and one of the patriarchs of European and world politics.
In his message President of Russia Vladimir Putin emphasised, in particular, that major events of modern German history are associated with the name of this outstanding man. Having occupied the position of the Federal Chancellor for many years, Mr Kohl played a key role in the end of the Cold War and the unification of Germany.
“I was lucky enough to personally meet with Helmut Kohl. I sincerely admired his wisdom and ability to make balanced, far-sighed decisions in the most difficult situations. In Russia he will be remembered as a consistent supporter of the development of friendly relations between our countries, a man who made a tremendous contribution to the consolidation of a mutually beneficial bilateral partnership and neighbourly ties,” the President noted in his message.
The President of Russia conveyed his sincere sympathy and support to the family and friends of the deceased, the Government and all the people of Germany.
