Dmitry Medvedev signed Federal Law On Ratification of the Agreement between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Finland on the Lease by Finland of the Russian Part of the Saimaa Canal and the Surrounding Area and the Order of Navigation through the Saimaa Canal.
The Agreement was signed in Lappeenranta on May 27, 2010. It takes into account 50 years of positive experience of operating the Saimaa Canal and is designed to ensure continued operation of the Saimaa Canal as a single complex under the control of the Republic of Finland.
The Agreement extends the lease for Finland's use of the Russian part of the Saimaa Canal and the surrounding area for another 50 years.
