Vladimir Putin attended the funeral of Jacques Chirac, former President of the French Republic and a prominent statesman.
The funeral ceremony was held in the Church of Saint Sulpice in Paris. It was attended by Jacques Chirac’s family, France’s leadership, as well as the heads of several states and governments, in particular the presidents of Germany, Georgia, Italy, Slovenia, the prime ministers of Belgium, Hungary, Serbia, the Czech Republic, Croatia and other leaders.
After the funeral, Vladimir Putin briefly spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron.
September 30 has been declared a day of national mourning in France. Flags were lowered on government buildings; Jacques Chirac was honoured with a moment of silence at government agencies, public and educational institutions in France.
Jacques Chirac died on September 26 at the age of 86. Vladimir Putin sent a message of condolences to Bernadette Chirac on the death of her husband.
