Telephone conversation with Prime Minister of Iraq Haider al-Abadi

At the Iraqi side's initiative, Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with Prime Minister of the Republic of Iraq Haider al-Abadi.

Both sides had detailed exchange of views in connection with the launch by the Iraqi government forces of an operation to retake Mosul from ISIL.

The Russian President wished the Iraqi army and its allies success in achieving the set goal. Vladimir Putin supported the efforts undertaken by the Iraqi government to eliminate the hotbed of international terrorism and protect the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In discussing the two countries’ joint anti-terrorist efforts, Mr Putin and Mr al-Abadi appraised highly the work of the Information Centre in Baghdad, which was used to coordinate operations by the military from Russia, Iraq, Iran and Syria.

Vladimir Putin informed Haider al-Abadi of the efforts undertaken by Russia to deescalate the situation in Aleppo, including plans to introduce a humanitarian pause for the free passage of civilians and withdrawal of militants from the city.

Both sides expressed mutual desire to further continue joint work in all areas of the Syrian settlement.
