Meeting with President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev

December 22, 2014, The Kremlin, Moscow

Vladimir Putin met with President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev.

The President of Kazakhstan talked about his visit to Ukraine. The leaders also discussed prospects for bilateral cooperation and further deepening integration processes.

In addition, the heads of Russia and Kazakhstan signed the Protocol on Exchanging Documents on the Ratification of the Agreement between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Kazakhstan on Good Neighbourly Relations and Cooperation in the 21st Century. The Agreement was signed by Mr Putin and Mr Nazarbayev in November 2013 in Yekaterinburg.

The President of Kazakhstan is visiting Russia to take part in the  CSTO and Eurasian Economic Council summits, which will be held in Moscow on Tuesday.

Beginning of meeting with President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev

President of Russia Vladimir Putin: Mr Nazarbayev, I am very pleased to see you at this late hour, but I don’t think it’s a problem – we will have an opportunity to talk at our leisure.

I know that you have arrived in Russia via Kiev – you will have a chance to talk about your meeting in the Ukrainian capital. And, of course, we will discuss our bilateral plans and plans for further deepening our integration processes.

I am very happy to see you. Welcome!

President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev: Thank you, Mr Putin, for finding the time to meet before tomorrow’s important events.

Although we are meeting at a late hour, I want to say that 2014 is drawing to a close. It was 15 years ago that you first became President of Russia, and we met then as well.

If you recall, in September 1999, you visited us in Almaty as Prime Minister. That was the first time we met.

In these years, you have ended the chaos in Russia, restoring vertical power. Now, Russia is quite different. I listened to your Address [to the Federal Assembly] and the major news conference. I wish great success to the programmes you have recently laid out.

This year, we signed an agreement in Astana on creating the Eurasian Economic Union, and it will come into force on January 1, 2015. In spite of all the ups and downs, I think we must support this organisation and make it viable and interesting for everyone.

Today, we will be signing a law on our agreement with amendments. After that, I will tell you about the meetings I had earlier today.

Vladimir Putin: Good. Thank you very much.
