Dmitry Medvedev sent a message of greetings to the participants of the First Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF).
The message reads, in part:
The First Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) held in such a distinguished format is a vitally important event that marks a new stage in the development of global energy and the natural gas industry.
As a leading energy power, Russia pursues a consistent policy aimed at the consolidation of gas producing countries. In 2009 we actively supported the transformation of this informal tool that served to promote dialogue into an efficient and dynamic organisation. Its objectives include enhancing the role of the gas sector, balancing the interests of producers and consumers of this commodity and harmonising the global and regional markets.
The process of establishing the GECF has been consistent and successful. The initial stage is nearing completion, and the next task is to develop a business strategy and establish effective mechanisms to ensure the legitimate interests of producing countries.
GECF member states have significant potential: 70% of the world’s blue fuel reserves and 42% of its production. This gives hope that the forum will become a significant factor that will largely determine the future development of the international economic system.
This year the summit’s theme is Natural Gas: Meeting the Sustainable Development Challenges of the XXI Century, which accurately captures the essence of the upcoming discussions and sets the organisation’s target as strengthening the role of this rising commodity – a unique, clean energy source – in the global economy. Russia will continue to actively promote the efficient operation of the forum, enhancing its international prestige and influence.
In conclusion, let me express my gratitude to Qatar and personally to Emir Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani for his contribution to the establishment of the forum, the establishment of its headquarters in the capital of Qatar, and the preparation and hosting this summit.”
The First Gas Exporting Countries Forum is held in Doha, Qatar. In addition to Russia GECF members include Algeria, Egypt, Iran, Qatar, Libya, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela, Bolivia, Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea and Oman. Norway, the Netherlands and Kazakhstan have the observer status.
