Telephone conversations with heads of Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Iran

February 22, 2012

Dmitry Medvedev had telephone conversations with King of Saudi Arabia Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, Prime Minister of Iraq Nouri al-Maliki, and President of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

During his conversations with the heads of Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Iran concerning the situation in Syria, Dmitry Medvedev noted Russia’s use of veto power during the UN vote to prevent attempts by certain nations within and outside the region from taking advantage of a proposed draft resolution to implement a scenario of external interference in Syria’s domestic processes. The President of Russia stressed the need to promote comprehensive dialogue between the conflicting sides in Syria, while highlighting that any actions that could instigate refusal to engage in this kind of dialogue would open the path toward civil war and even more casualties.

During the conversations with Prime Minister of Iraq Nouri al-Maliki and President of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, emphasis was placed on the need to use both bilateral and multilateral international formats in order to promote quicker achievement of peace and stability in Syria.
