Law on ratification of agreement on conditions for Russian military base presence in Tajikistan

Vladimir Putin signed Federal Law On Ratification of the Agreement between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Tajikistan on the Status and Conditions of Presence of the Russian Military Base in the Republic of Tajikistan.

The Agreement was signed on October 5, 2012 in Dushanbe and stipulates that during the period of its presence within the Republic of Tajikistan’s territory, the Russian military base protects the interests of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Tajikistan and jointly with the Armed Forces of the Republic of Tajikistan, in cooperation with the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and other forces and military formations and bodies assures the Republic of Tajikistan’s security.

In order to achieve the indicated objectives, the Russian side will facilitate the provision of compatible weaponry as well as military and special equipment to the Republic of Tajikistan. This provision will be carried out in accordance with the Russian Federation’s legislation on military technical cooperation with foreign states.

The Agreement establishes and regulates issues pertaining to the status of the Russian military base personnel, service members’ families and the base’s civil personnel, the Russian military base’s jurisdiction, the use of the Russian base’s military formations in cooperation with the Armed Forces of the Republic of Tajikistan and other issues.

The Agreement is valid for a term of 49 years, with the option of automatic extension for five-year periods.

The Agreement stipulates the termination of previously signed Russian-Tajikistani agreements on matters regulated by this Agreement.
