Law on ratifying the Russian-Turkish agreement on Russian burial sites in Turkey and Turkish burial sites in Russia

November 25, 2013

Vladimir Putin signed Federal Law On Ratification of the Agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Turkish Republic on Russian Burial Sites in the Turkish Republic and Turkish Burial Sites in the Russian Federation.

The Agreement was signed in Istanbul on December 3, 2012.

The Agreement establishes the international legal base for ensuring proper upkeep of Russian military burial sites in Turkey and Turkish burial sites in Russia, sets out the procedures for allocating land for Russian and Turkish burial sites, carrying out exhumation and reburial of remains, and ensuring burial sites’ protection and preservation.

In particular, the Agreement contains provisions for giving the necessary assistance on each side for citizens of the other country to come to burial sites to remember the dead and fallen.

The Agreement will have a positive effect on Russian-Turkish cooperation in military commemoration matters.
