July 29, 2011

Dmitry Medvedev submitted the Agreement between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Abkhazia on Cooperation and Mutual Assistance in Customs to the State Duma for ratification.

The Agreement was signed in Sukhum, Abkhazia on October 16, 2010.

The purpose of the Agreement is the implementation of the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Abkhazia of September 17, 2008.

The Agreement is aimed at strengthening cooperation in customs and countering customs violations, as well as facilitating passenger and cargo traffic between Russia and Abkhazia.

The Agreement stipulates the creation of specialised customs authorities by mutual agreement of the parties on the two states’ territories: a Russian customs authority in Abkhazia and an Abkhazian customs authority in Russia.
