Vladimir Putin sent greetings to President of the Republic of Abkhazia Aslan Bzhania on the 15th anniversary of the republic’s independence.
The message reads, in part:
“In August 2008, Russia recognised the republic’s state sovereignty, based on the freely expressed will of the Abkhazian people and in accordance with the UN Charter and other fundamental international documents.
Over the past 15 years, Abkhazia has made substantial progress in building a democratic state and an independent national economy. Our countries have established an alliance and a strategic partnership.
I would like to reaffirm that the Russian Federation will further take every effort to provide assistance to the fraternal Abkhazian people in ensuring defence capability and security, protecting its foreign policy interests and solving pressing economic and social issues.”
