The summit’s final plenary session took place with the participation of eight heads of state and government. The agenda included key issues of international security, joint fight against terrorism and the nuclear programmes of Iran and North Korea.
The discussion on non-proliferation focused on the nuclear programmes of Iran and North Korea. Russia unquestionably supports only political and diplomatic methods in their settlement on the basis of dialogue in strict compliance with international law and UN resolutions.
The meeting also reviewed vital regional issues, including the situation in Afghanistan and the Middle East. As other G8 states, Russia is interested in the situation in Afghanistan returning to normal as soon as possible and the country becoming a strong and stable state. The meeting's participants reviewed possible steps of the international community in combating terrorism and resolving socioeconomic problems in that country. It is of primary importance for Russia to end the drug threat emanating from Afghanistan.
Regarding the issue of Middle East settlement, the Russian party believes that the ongoing indirect talks between Palestine and Israel should become a direct dialogue as soon as possible and be aimed at creating an independent and viable Palestinian state that coexists in peace and security with Israel.
The decisions adopted at the G8 Summit are reflected in the Muskoka Declaration.
In addition, on the sidelines of the summit, presidents of Russia, the United States and France, as heads of states co-chairing the OSCE Minsk Group, have adopted a joint declaration on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
