Presidential Advisor, Special Presidential Representative on Climate Issues Ruslan Edelgeriyev took part via videoconference in the ministerial session of the 11th Petersberg Climate Dialogue (PCD).
Representatives from the relevant ministries and departments of 30 countries discussed the recovery of the global economy after the pandemic of the novel coronavirus infection in the context of countering climate change. They exchanged views on the integration of the recovery process with updates on the national contributions under the commitments of the Paris Climate Agreement.
Ruslan Edelgeriyev emphasised the need for real, rather than declarative pooling of efforts to counter the negative consequences of climate change. He noted that despite the economic and social consequences of the pandemic, the creation of an inclusive system of transition to low-carbon development would make it possible to minimise the burden on the environment and considerably improve living standards.
During the session, the Russian delegation noted the need to provide private companies with non-discriminatory access to international financial markets and to reject the unlawful unilateral sanctions and restrictions imposed without the mandate of the UN Security Council.
Mr Edelgeriyev also conducted bilateral talks with State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety Jochen Falsbarth. They discussed the implementation of joint projects on low-carbon development and the drafting of the legal foundation for implementing the Paris Climate Agreement.
The Petersberg Climate Dialogue was launched in 2010 at the initiative of Angela Merkel to facilitate negotiations between the participants in the UN framework Convention on Climate Change.
