Adviser to the President and Special Presidential Representative on Climate Issues Ruslan Edelgeriyev held the 32nd meeting of the Presidential Executive Office interdepartmental working group on climate change and sustainable development.
The meeting covered, in particular, creating a unified system for monitoring the emission and absorption of greenhouse gases on Russian territory. Representatives of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment presented information on developing a federal information system for monitoring the quality of atmospheric air and a comprehensive environmental monitoring system. The meeting participants discussed prospects for integrating various information systems. Ruslan Edelgeriyev pointed out the importance of meeting the deadlines for fulfilling the President's instructions.
There was also a discussion on updating the methods of assessing the potential of ecosystems to absorb greenhouse gas emissions. In particular, the Russian Academy of Sciences suggested certain changes. Scientifically based amendments will make it possible to fully assess the amount of greenhouse gas absorption by managed forests and other lands, as well as greenhouse gas emissions from fires, tree felling and other forest disturbances. At the same time, it is important to combine Russian and foreign methods to ensure the comparability of information.
