Russia joined the COP28 UAE Declaration on Sustainable Agriculture, Resilient Food Systems, and Climate Action, proposed by the UAE at the opening the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. The conference, chaired by the UAE, is taking place in Dubai from November 30 through December 12, 2023. Presidential Adviser Ruslan Edelgeriyev is leading the Russian delegation.
The Declaration calls upon the involved parties to proactively incorporate current strategic documents addressing climate change into agricultural and food projects. This includes relevant national contributions, long-term development strategies focusing on low greenhouse gas emissions and adaptation plans. Emphasising the need for accessible funding to facilitate adaptation of the agriculture sector and food production systems to climate change, the Declaration underscores the importance of strengthening a non-discriminatory, open, equitable, all-inclusive, transparent, and rules-based multilateral trading system, with the World Trade Organisation taking the lead.
There are plans to organise regional and global experience-exchange sessions to facilitate the implementation of the Declaration. Participants in the 29th Conference of the Parties (2024) will assess collective progress made during its implementation.
Over 150 countries have joined the Declaration to date.
