Greetings on the opening of Sambek Heights National Military and Historical Museum Complex of the Great Patriotic War

August 30, 2020

Vladimir Putin sent greetings to the participants in the opening ceremony for the Sambek Heights National Military and Historical Museum Complex of the Great Patriotic War.

The message reads, in part:

“It is gratifying that during this year proclaimed the Year of Memory and Glory, many Russian regions are opening new museums and unveiling monuments dedicated to our people’s feat of valour in the Great Patriotic War.

The Red Army’s massive breakthrough of the Miuss defence lines and the liberation of the Rostov Region from the fierce and ruthless enemy is by right regarded as one of the heroic and dramatic pages in the history of this most brutal 20th-century war. Here, in the Don area, members of different ethnic groups were fighting shoulder to shoulder, displaying valour and unparalleled courage and bringing the Great Victory ever closer.

It is important that the Sambek Heights Museum Complex, which has merged the 1980 Glory Memorial and the modern multimedia exhibition space, has been created at the initiative of war veterans and with support from members of the search and military-patriotic movement. It is also crucial that its construction involved numerous residents of this country and has become a truly national undertaking.

I am confident that the new museum and its informative, educational, and patriotic projects will evoke a sincere and genuine interest in visitors from all generations and will help to protect our historical memory.”
