Dmitry Medvedev held a meeting on the socio-economic development of the Chukotka Autonomous District

As he opened the meeting, Dmitry Medvedev noted that the dynamic development of the region is being hindered by the lack of developed transport and energy infrastructure. The problem can be solved by major investment projects to develop the road and rail network and small transport aircraft. Energy problems can be solved, in particular through the use of renewable energy.

Dmitry Medvedev emphasised the special role of Chukotka in the development of the Arctic region. Chukotka can and should regain its role and right to act as a key link to the North Sea route. Port infrastructure in the region needs to be developed to provide year-round access to icebreaker escorts. The use of Chukotka’s ports of deserves separate attention and special study by the government cabinet. According to the head of state, the effective development of the Arctic is of strategic importance not only for Chukotka, but also the entire Far East.

The President said that the implementation of all projects would require the introduction of modern technologies to develop new mineral deposits and extraction technologies in remote areas.

Dmitry Medvedev paid a great deal of attention to the development of small indigenous peoples of the north, preserving their cultural identity and way of life. He also raised the issue of the expansion of tourism infrastructure as tourism in the region is growing.

This meeting was the first of a series of meetings on the Far East which the President will hold.
