Law ratifying the Agreement between Russia and Armenia to Establish a Joint Regional Air Defence System in the Caucasus Region of Collective Security

December 29, 2016

Vladimir Putin signed Federal Law On Ratification of the Agreement between Russia and Armenia to Establish a Joint Regional Air Defence System in the Caucasus Region of Collective Security.

The Agreement was signed in Moscow on December 23, 2015.

The Agreement establishes a regulatory foundation for the joint use of troops (forces) that perform air defence tasks of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Armenia, and also determine the tasks, functions and principles for building and using troops (forces) that are part of the Joint Regional Air Defence System in the Caucasus Region of Collective Security.

The Agreement provides for the formation of the Joint Regional Air Defence System as a component of the Joint Air Defence System of the member states of the  Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

The main tasks, functions and principles of forming and deploying troops (forces) of the Joint Regional Air Defence System are set out by the Provisions on the Joint Regional Air Defence System that are appended to the Agreement and constitute its integral part.

The Agreement has been concluded for a term of five years with an opportunity to automatically extend it for subsequent five-year periods.

The Agreement fully meets the interests of the Russian Federation. Its implementation will enhance the security of the state borders of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Armenia, and determine the procedure for deploying air defence troops (forces) during joint combat duty.
