Dmitry Medvedev congratulated heads of CIS countries, South Ossetia and Abkhazia, as well as citizens of Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, and Moldova on the 65th Anniversary of the Great Victory

May 8, 2010

In a telegram addressed to the President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan, the President of Russia emphasised:

”In our shared history May 9 is a symbol of the courage and valour shown by our soldiers in defeating the aggressor and saving our country and the world from the Nazi threat. We will always honour the great deeds of our veterans and home front workers, preserve the historical truth about the events of those years and pass it on to the next generation.“

The Russian President's message of congratulations to President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev reads, in part:

”Our people honourably withstood the hardships and ordeals of the war years and fought together against the threat of Nazi enslavement. Unquestioning loyalty to high ideals of service to the Motherland remains the moral compass for the citizens of Russia and Azerbaijan today, who will never forget the great feats accomplished by the victorious nations.“

The message to President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko reads:

”In the entire history of humankind there has never been a more terrible, destructive and bloody war. On the front and in partisan groups, our people selflessly fought against the Nazi aggressors, despite suffering devastating losses. Their heroism, unity and solidarity saved civilisation, gave us the opportunity to further engage in democratic development, and make our countries prosperous.“

In a telegram to President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev, Dmitry Medvedev wrote:

”The anniversary of Victory takes a special place in this year's agenda of the Commonwealth of Independent States. Throughout the CIS the year 2010 is the Year of Veterans, and its motto is ‘We won together!’

In a telegram to President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon the President of Russia noted:

”Soldiers and workers in Russia and Tajikistan helped bring about victory by their selflessness and heroism, risking their very lives. Our people fought shoulder to shoulder in the battles for Moscow, at Stalingrad and at Kursk. We stormed Berlin and liberated Europe. The memory of these exploits is immortal.“

The message to President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov reads:

”On these days we bow our heads before our veterans, in the deepest gratitude for the heroism of all those on the front and behind the lines who helped bring about Victory, bravely enduring terrible ordeals and losses.“

In the message to President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych, the Russian President stressed:

”I am confident the peoples of Russia and Ukraine will always cherish and remember our heroic history, preserve and promote our shared spiritual and cultural heritage, and give a fitting rebuff to irresponsible politicians who are trying to bury and distort our past.“

The telegram to President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov reads, in part:

”Our peoples fought together against the Nazi invaders and showed unprecedented resilience and courage. We will always remember and honour the great deeds of our veterans and home front workers, who gave their lives for the sake of Victory over the enemy.“

The message to President of Abkhazia Sergei Bagapsh reads:

”The memory of those who gave their lives to bring about Victory will live on in our hearts. Their example of brotherhood, mutual assistance and solidarity serves today as our moral compass. This will undoubtedly serve as the foundation for the further fruitful development of Russian-Abkhazian relations.“

In his telegram to President of South Ossetia Eduard Kokoity, the President emphasised:

”The grateful memory of the heroism of war veterans and home front workers during the  Great Patriotic War will remain in our hearts forever. It is our sacred duty to educate the younger generation and give it a sense of patriotism and pride in our shared history. The friendly and fraternal relations between our countries will no doubt further contribute to this effort.“

In his message to the citizens of Georgia the President said:

”The immortal feats of the soldier-liberators who fought shoulder to shoulder in a brutal war against Nazism, defended their native land and ensured a peaceful future for their descendants, has a special place in the long history of the Russian and Georgian peoples.

The war cost tens of millions of people their lives and shattered the lives of millions more. We are all indebted to the victors who laid down their lives for the sake of peace and freedom. Their example compels us to preserve and multiply the traditions of friendship, good neighbourliness and mutual assistance which helped us to survive in hard times and to achieve a glorious Victory together. This call will strike a respondent chord in the vast majority of the citizens of Russia and Georgia.

This is why there was a powerful wave of indignation when the current rulers in Tbilisi committed sacrilege by recently destroying a memorial to the fallen heroes of the Great Patriotic War. I am certain that any attempt to destroy the friendship between Russia and Georgia is bound to fail. And I am equally sure that the Kutaisi memorial will be rebuilt and that we will revive the good, open and constructive relations between our countries, based on the firm foundation of our strong cultural, spiritual and historical ties. There is no other option!

On this great holiday I want to express my most sincere wishes for the health and welfare of Georgian veterans of the Great Patriotic War, and for peace and prosperity to all the people of Georgia.“

The message to citizens of Kyrgyzstan reads:

”The solidarity and unity of our peoples allowed us to defeat the Nazi invaders and eliminate the threat of the destruction of civilization's very foundations. Our great duty is to preserve the glory of the winners and oppose any attempts to rewrite and distort our common history.

I am convinced that the friendly and allied relations between Russia and Kyrgyzstan will continue to serve both the good of our citizens and the interests of regional stability and security.“

The message to citizens of Moldova reads:

”By overcoming hard ordeals and shouldering terrible losses our people defeated Nazism and defended their homeland. As a single, indestructible force we fought the Nazi invaders shoulder to shoulder in the front lines and in the rear, thus achieving freedom and peace.

The victory came at a terrible price and fierce fighting claimed tens of millions of lives. Our common duty is to honour the sacred memory of the immortal exploits of our soldiers and workers on the home front, and decisively defend the great legacy of those tragic days, namely the solidarity and unity of our peoples.

I am convinced that our common historical heritage, and cultural and spiritual closeness represent a solid foundation for further developing multifaceted Russian-Moldovan relations.“
