Deputy Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office and Chairman of the Council for Interethnic Relations Presidium Magomedsalam Magomedov announced changes to the Presidium composition. The Presidential Executive Order of September 1, 2016, introduced the post of deputy chairman. Valery Tishkov, former minister for ethnic issues and secretary of the Department of History and Language Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, was appointed to the position. Igor Barinov, head of the Federal Agency for Ethnic Affairs, was also included in the Presidium.
The meeting participants discussed current issues of state ethnic policy that will be presented to the President. Mr Magomedov announced the preliminary results of the work by the Council’s working bodies and government bodies that are involved in preparation for the upcoming meeting.
Mr Barinov, head of the Federal Agency for Ethnic Affairs, presented the main report on current issues of state ethnic policy through 2025.
During the discussion, Magomedsalam Magomedov noted the importance of further efforts to develop comprehensive infrastructure for state ethnic policy. He also stressed that it is necessary to continue the social and cultural adaptation of migrants as this area of activity may lack attention after the abolition of the Federal Migration Service. The Presidium members believe authority in this area must be transferred to the Federal Agency for Ethnic Affairs. Furthermore, it was noted that this area required closer contacts and cooperation between government bodies and civil society institutions.
The meeting participants presented their proposals on measures to strengthen the civic consciousness and spiritual solidarity of the multi-ethnic Russian nation. Specifically, they included ideas on legislative work and developing the state-society partnership.
The Council Presidium outlined the issues for discussion at the upcoming meeting of the Presidential Council for Interethnic Relations.
