Federal Law to improve confinement conditions

July 14, 2015

Vladimir Putin signed Federal Law On Amendments to the Criminal Penitentiary Code of the Russian Federation to Increase Monthly Payments to the Convicted for the Purchase of Food and Essentials.

The Federal Law aims to improve conditions for those sentenced to imprisonment in line with the Development Concept for the Russian Federation penitentiary system through to 2020.

The need to amend the Criminal Penitentiary Code resulted from the fact that currently the amount of money the inmates are allowed to spend on food and essentials, apart from the money earned during their imprisonment, pensions and social benefits that can be spent without restriction, are insufficient.

The Federal Law envisages a differentiated increase in the amount of money allowed for spending depending on imprisonment conditions and type of penitentiary facility.

The Federal Law also envisages increasing the extra amount of money prisoners are allowed to spend on food and essentials as means of reward.
