The President signed Federal Law On Amendments to the Federal Law On Citizenship of the Russian Federation and Articles 8 and 14 of the Federal Law on the Legal Status of Foreign Citizens in the Russian Federation.
The Federal Law establishes that making a knowingly false statement that provides grounds for revoking the decision on granting citizenship of the Russian Federation may consist in violating the obligation to observe the Constitution of the Russian Federation and the legislation of the Russian Federation if the aim of receiving citizenship of the Russian Federation was an attempt to undermine the foundations of the constitutional system of the Russian Federation, which resulted in the committing of a crime (preparations to commit a crime or an attempted crime) of terrorist or extremist nature, and if this is confirmed by a court verdict.
In addition, the Federal Law provides for taking the Oath of the Citizen of the Russian Federation by a person that is acquiring citizenship of the Russian Federation as a result of being granted citizenship of the Russian Federation, having restored citizenship of the Russian Federation, or based on other grounds envisaged by the Federal Law On Citizenship of the Russian Federation or an international treaty of the Russian Federation. Refusal to take the oath creates the grounds for revoking the decision on acquiring citizenship of the Russian Federation.
The Federal Law also specifies the terms for the renunciation of foreign citizenship by foreign persons who apply for citizenship of the Russian Federation under a simplified procedure (in particular, it regulates the procedure for the renunciation of Ukrainian citizenship by Ukrainian citizens).
