Greetings to participants in celebrations of the fifth anniversary of the signing of the Act of Canonical Communion

May 17, 2012

The President congratulated participants in celebrations of the fifth anniversary of the signing of the Act of Canonical Communion and the anniversary of the reunification of the Russian Orthodox Church.

The telegram reads, in part:

“This event had great historical significance and was a clear symbol of the rebirth of Russia and the Russian Orthodox Church. The signing of the Act of Canonical Communion brought an end to the division of the church – a divide that had deep, tragic consequences for Russian society – and became an important step in the spiritual consolidation of the entire Russian community.

We honour Patriarch Alexii II of Moscow and All Russia and Metropolitan Laurus of Eastern America and New York, who sealed the document on re-establishing the church’s unity with their signatures. We also thank everyone who brought this event closer to fruition, and who works to strengthen spiritual unity.

Today, the Russian Orthodox Church is actively engaged in solving nationwide problems, promotes rallying society around spiritual and moral values, and strengthens compatriots’ ties with their Fatherland. And wherever its temples may stand – in Russia or abroad – our Church helps people maintain their faith, national identity and culture, and to feel themselves a united people.”
