Greetings to participants and guests of the Far Eastern International Forum of Journalists

October 18, 2010

Dmitry Medvedev sent his greetings to participants and guests of the Far Eastern International Forum of Journalists currently taking place in Khabarovsk. The forum’s theme is Russian Far East: Discoveries of the 21st Century.

The message reads, in part:

“You will be jointly discussing a wide range of current topics, such as reinforcing freedom of speech, employing modern information technologies, ensuring independence and economic sustainability of the media, and strengthening cooperation between the press and the authorities in addressing challenges of public concern.

It is pleasing that so much attention at this forum will be paid to the development of television channels, radio stations, and print publications in the Far East. Local media is the major factor for maintaining Russia’s common information space, and it is therefore imperative to improve regional journalists’ skills, including through reviewing the experience of the mainstream national media and broadening ties with foreign colleagues.

I am certain that your initiatives and suggestions will be in demand and will help deepen international media contacts.”

The forum is attended by over 300 representatives of various media outlets from Russia, Japan, Turkey, France, and Italy, as well as by Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District Viktor Ishayev, governors of far eastern regions, deputies of various legislatures, scientists, business community members, and representatives of public and youth organisations.
