Under the Constitution the President nominates candidates to the post of Supreme Court judge for approval by the Federation Council. Earlier this year, Vladimir Putin presented to the Upper House of Parliament another seven judges for approval.
The Supreme Court is the supreme judicial body of the Russian Federation. The President amended its legal status with the approval of the Law on amendments to the Constitution.
Pursuant to this law, the Supreme Court and the Court of Arbitration were merged to form a new body – the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation — to succeed the two former bodies.
