Vladimir Putin sent greetings to the participants in a joint ceremonial meeting marking Russian Science Day and the 80th anniversary of Russia’s nuclear industry.
The message reads, in part:
“We have every right to be proud of a whole cohort of outstanding researchers. It was their genius, dedicated work and novel approaches that forged our stately might and reinforced our country’s international standing.
The creation of the atomic industry in 1945 was a major milestone and a true symbol of scientific progress for our country. Talented researchers, designers, engineers and other specialists worked selflessly and heroically and succeeded in their efforts to achieve breakthrough discoveries. In doing so, they demonstrated the power of professional teamwork, as well as their dedication to the cause of their lives and national interests. Efforts to fulfil the atomic project largely defined development patterns for the national economy, as well as for the energy and healthcare sectors, defence manufacturing, and helped achieve strategic parity.
It is essential that we make full use of the unique potential and the truly boundless innovation opportunities the nuclear industry offers us today for upgrading the national economy, ensuring the country’s defence capabilities and energy security, and training advanced, qualified personnel. We must step up fundamental and applied scientific research and pay special attention to developing new solutions such as small modular reactors and fast-neutron reactors, which are expected to dominate the nuclear energy sector of the future. Of course, our priorities also include engaging in promising space and Arctic programmes, and also other undertakings with a view to reinforcing Russia’s technological and industrial sovereignty.
I am confident that you will continue building on the glorious traditions of your predecessors through your sincere and dedicated efforts for the benefit of our Fatherland and its people.”
