Law on ratification of Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities

May 3, 2012

Dmitry Medvedev signed Federal Law On Ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was adopted by the 61st UN General Assembly in December 2006 and signed on behalf of the Russian Federation in New York on September 24, 2008.

The Convention aims to ensure the full participation of persons with disabilities in civil, political, economic, social and cultural life of society (social integration), the elimination of discrimination based on disability, protection of persons with disabilities and their enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms, as well as the establishment of effective legal mechanisms to ensure these rights.

The Convention’s ratification will provide additional guarantees of security, protection and development of social and economic rights of the disabled, as well as serve as a benchmark for further improvement of legal regulation and practice in the field of social protection of disabled persons.
