Message of greetings to UN General Assembly special session on world drug problem

April 21, 2016

Vladimir Putin has sent a message of greetings to participants in the UN General Assembly special session on the world drug problem.

The message reads, in part:

“The current special session of the UN General Assembly on the world drug problem is quite an important and much-needed step in developing international anti-drug cooperation. At present, the issue of illicit drug production and drug trafficking has acquired a truly unprecedented scale.

The drug business, which has turned into one of the most aggressive forms of transnational crime, poses a real threat to the state and society, and claims the lives and destroys the health of millions of people. Drug cartels’ profits are also a source of financing for terrorist and extremist groups.

Obviously, this evil can only be countered through joint, coordinated efforts, by fully tapping the potential of all three UN anti-drug conventions. It is encouraging that the session’s final document has synthesised the constructive experience accumulated in this regard in different countries of the world.

We hope that coordinated diplomatic wording will be followed by concrete steps to put it into practice, both on the national and international level. For its part, Russia is determined to step up its efforts to curb the illegal circulation of narcotic substances in close interaction with other members of the international community.”
