Meeting with President of the Russian Football Union Sergei Fursenko

June 25, 2012, St Petersburg

Sergei Fursenko is leaving his post as President of the Russian Football Union. Mr Fursenko announced this to Vladimir Putin at their meeting in St Petersburg, prior to the President of Russia’s departure for Israel.

At his meeting with the President, Mr Fursenko noted:

“Unfortunately, the Russian national team has ended its participation in Euro 2012. It is rather saddening, as the team was very strong and Dick Advocaat worked quite well. Nevertheless, there was a miss. Our fans, who expected a different result, are certainly much disappointed. I should apologise to the fans for this result. I think that we have to analyse the result of the championship and our performance.

Besides, Dick Advocaat is leaving his post as the head coach for the Russian national team. I have made a difficult decision for myself – to also give up my post as President of the Russian Football Union.”

“I expect that everything will fall into place,” Mr Putin replied. “I want to thank you for your work. Football is developing in Russia, and quite intensively. We have new talented players and last national championship was very interesting. The judging system has been reformed to exclude fixed games, which is very important.”

The President of Russia agreed with Mr Fursenko’s decision on leaving his post as the Russian Football Union President and suggested that he continue his work at the UEFA administration.
