Vladimir Putin congratulated participants, organisers and guests of the 2015 Russian Chess Championship Superfinal that has opened in Chita.
The message reads, in part:
“These competitions traditionally bring together the best representatives of the national chess school, grand masters holding the highest titles. In the course of intense intellectual combat, they are to resolve a large number of complicated chess problems, demonstrating their talent and precision, creative audacity and the ability to plan complex combinations.
I am certain that the Superfinal will fully disclose the potential of our athletes, becoming a memorable event for chess lovers that would also help increase the popularity of this fascinating sport in Russia.”
The Superfinal of the 68th Russian Men’s Chess Championship and the 65th Russian Women’s Chess Championship will take place on August 8–21 in Chita. Each tournament will involve 12 participants, with the total prize fund amounting to 8 million rubles.
Traditionally the organisers have prepared an extensive additional programme for chess fans of all ages. Apart from the main competition, it includes an international children’s tournament, a rapid chess tournament, masterclasses, lectures and multi-board chess games.
The first Russian national chess tournament took place in 1899.
