Vladimir Putin sent his greetings to participants, organisers and guests of the 2016 World Modern Pentathlon Championships taking place in Moscow on May 23–29.
The message reads, in part:
“This sport, proposed by the famous Pierre de Coubertin, has long since been on the Olympic programme, always gaining the love of numerous fans through its audience appeal and unique aesthetic. I would like to note that Russia has made a big contribution to developing the pentathlon and has trained a whole constellation of renowned athletes. In recognition of these services, Moscow has been given the honour of hosting the world championship for the fifth time now.
Over these days, devoted sports fans, prominent specialists and members of the press have gathered at the Olimpiysky Sports Complex. Of course, the world’s best pentathlon athletes are here as well to engage in magnificent and intense competition, with the best of the best going on to take up the greatest challenge of all and take part in the upcoming 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro”.
