Amendments to legislation on piracy protection

July 3, 2013

Vladimir Putin signed Federal Law On Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of the Russian Federation on Protecting Intellectual Property Rights in Information and Telecommunications Networks.

The federal law is aimed at improving mechanisms protecting exclusive rights to films from offences involving distribution of data containing such items covered by exclusive rights, via information and telecommunications networks, including the Internet.

The law provides for amendments to the Civil Procedure Code of the Russian Federation, according to which in case of requests by rights-holders Moscow City Court may take interim measures to protect exclusive rights to films that are unlawfully distributed via information and telecommunications networks, including the Internet. The law sets out the grounds, timeframe and regime governing the terms for applying and lifting prior interim measures. The law envisages a possibility for a rights-holder to make such a request online using a qualified electronic signature.
